Boomers and Seniors - Maintain Your Family History
What are you boomers and seniors doing to maintain your family history? Sad to say my score on this subject rates a C+ at best. Is there a person or persons designated to keep and preserve your family history? There are several family history website where you can get lots of helpful information. I just finished a book on the Oregon desert that was written by two boys whose parents were ranchers. They were doing “grown up work” when they were 10 years old. Reminds me of my folks giving me a well used Stevens Junior 22 caliber rifle on my tenth birthday – certainly not as a toy, but to be used only for putting food on the table. The short rifle was a single shot and used only short shells. When we needed meat, Mother would give me three bullets and I would quietly disappear into the woods on our farm in Texas, where there was an abundance of squirrels. Sometimes I would come home with three squirrels, often just one when I shot too quickly. Rabbits were next on the family’s diet – preferably cotton tails over jack rabbits. Tales like this are included in my attempts to add to our history. I believe our history should include items other than born, married, number of off spring and death. About 6 years ago, I decided to get a computer camera and microphone to visit with some friends on the internet. Then I exercised my right to not obtain a full nights sleep (this happens almost every night anyway), and put the real early morning hours into recording my immediate family history. It took several nights of recording, but I do have it on seven CD’s. We will be a blessing to friends and loved ones by passing on history of our families. Do yourself a favor and get started on, on at least look at ways to begin.
